Krav maga

Krav maga (Hebrew for close combat) is the official self-defence and fighting system used by the Israeli army, police and security services.

This training method has received the approval of security professionals and police around the world. Krav maga is a modern method based around a logical and practical approach. This simple and efficient method is adapted to all practitioners, regardless of their style or level and allows quick progress.

It was created by Imi LICHTENFELD qui developed it during his multi-disciplinary career as a close combat instructor first in the army then in civilian society.

Imi LICHTENFELD (1910-1998), creator of krav maga

He was born in 1910 in Bratislava, Slovakia. Inspired and encourages by his father, Samuel, an ex-circus acrobat and wrestler, physical education instructor, police detective and chief instructor in the regional police for self-defence, Imi practices numerous sports.

He finally decided to concentrate on gymnastics, wrestling and boxing, actively taking part in a great deal of competitions, mainly wrestling. When fascism appeared in the 1930s, Imi assembled a group of young athletes, whose mission it was to protect the local Jewish community against fascist troops.

He therefore took part in numerous fights, which sharpened his knowledge of street fighting and the difference between that and sporting competitions: the first principles of krav maga were born.

Through his actions, he quickly became unpopular with the local authorities and had to leave Bratislava. His voyage lasted two years, after which he arrived in Israel, where he taught basic self-defence techniques, then carried on his activities among the Tsahal, the Israeli army.

It is during his 20 years within Tsahal that Imi perfected his system, whilst dealing with the teaching of instructors and members of the army’s elite units.

Later, krav maga entered civilian life, in both public and private institutions and was recognised by the Ministry of National Education. It finally spread across the world (USA, France… Monaco etc).

The krav maga system, as developed by Imi, is founded on moral and human values, underlining the importance of integrity, humility and mutual respect. Imi Lichtenfeld died in 9 January 1998 at the age of 87.

Legitimate defence:

“Art. 122-5.There is no legal responsibility for whomever, after an unjustified attack on himself or a third party, accomplishes, at the same time, an act required by the use for the legitimate defence of himself or a third party, unless there is a disproportion between the means of defence used and the seriousness of the attack”. “There is no legal responsibility for whomever, in order to interrupt the execution of a crime or a misdemeanour against a person, accomplishes an act of defence, other than a voluntary homicide, when this act is strictly necessary for the goals sought, as long as the means of defence used are proportionate to the seriousness of the attack”.

“Art. 122-6. Legitimate defence can be considered to cover whomever accomplishes an act : 1° to fight away, during the night, an act of forced entry, violence or cunning in an inhabited area ; 2° to protect himself against perpetrators of robbery or looting undertaken with violence.”

State of urgency:

“Art 122-7. There is no legal responsibility for whomever, faced with an immediate or imminent danger towards himself, a third party or an possession, accomplishes an act to save the person of the possession, unless there is a disproportion between the means of defence used and the seriousness of the attack”.
